In Focus

Many benefits come with Fairtrade certification and sourcing. Even more can be achieved through tailored projects designed to achieve specific goals. We work  with producer organisations, companies, institutional donors, and researchers to create and measure projects that deliver impact. Here are some highlights.

Project

Transitioning towards Green Resilience

Indonesia faces pressing environmental and socio-economic challenges, including climate change-related risks and gender disparities. This project, implemented by Fairtrade and Bina Desa, aims to equip more than 1,600 smallholder farmers, including at least 30 percent women, across Java and Sulawesi to adopt sustainable farming practices and improve their livelihoods. Community-based organisations, young consumers, and local authorities participate in promoting environmentally sound and inclusive rural development.

"Way To Go"

The Way To Go programme with Lidl aims to improve incomes and promote sustainable farming practices in Brazil (oranges), Ghana (cocoa), Tanzania (cashews), and Honduras (coffee). Lidl pays an additional Income Improvement Premium which supports both direct payments to individual farmers and activities that promote sustainable farming, resilience, and opportunites for women farmers.

In the first phase of the cocoa project in Ghana (2020-2024), yields increased by around 22%, and the average income increased around 28% between 2020 and 2023.

LIFE FairTHRIVE

The EU Deforestation Regulation introduces new compliance requirements for companies placing products on the EU market, posing significant challenges, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. Funded by the European Commission, the LIFE FairTHRIVE project addresses this gap by equipping over 1,000 small and medium-sized enterprises in at least 12 EU Member States with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to comply with EUDR requirements.

West Africa Cocoa Programme evaluation (2025)

The Fairtrade West Africa Cocoa Programme has become a cornerstone of our work in the cocoa sector in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Sierra Leone. The second programme evaluation, published in November, finds that the programme is flexible, highly relevant, and widely appreciated, supporting cocoa cooperatives to navigate a rapidly changing environment marked by new regulatory demands, market dynamics, and structural challenges.
